During’s Israel assault on Gaza last summer, 19-year-old Basel Al Yazouri captured his people’s struggle through the lens of his Canon EOS 600D.
Afterwards, Al Yazouri submitted 15 images to the renowned Magnum Foundation in New York City, the world’s premier photography institution.
The prodigious Al Yazouri bested hundreds of applicants to become the first Palestinian to be awarded a fellowship by the Foundation. Al Yazouri is also the youngest fellow in Magnum’s history (he was 18 when selected him). Quiet appropriately, he was awarded the Human Rights Fellowship.
In its illustrious history, Magnum has never inducted a Palestinian photographer. Al Yazouri may, indeed, one day mark another first for Palestinian photography.
