A Public Display of Solidarity

On 20 August, hundreds of Palestinian and international solidarity activists marched across the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City to call attention to the shared struggle of Americans against “highly militarized police departments” and Palestinians against the Israeli occupation. As the demonstrators made their way across the bridge, a separate group unfurled a massive Palestinian flag over the nearby Manhattan Bridge. The flag hung for thirty minutes before city officials took it down, enough time for it to capture the attention of the local press and then the international media.

Written on the flag are the phrases “Gaza in our hearts” and “Boycott, Divest, Sanction.” (Len Tsou, 20 August)
